Vaccinations & TITERS

Shield your canine companion from diseases with a tailored vaccination plan.

Vaccinations protect your dog from contagious diseases, while TITERS are blood tests that measure your dog’s immunity to specific diseases. At Canine Companion Clinic, we provide individualized vaccination plans and interpret TITERS to ensure your dog is protected without over-vaccination.

Why are vaccinations important for my dog?

Vaccinations prevent serious and potentially fatal diseases such as parvovirus, distemper, and rabies. Alberta has specific vaccination requirements for dogs, particularly for rabies if traveling, boarding, or attending dog parks. Staying up-to-date helps protect your dog and the community.

How do I know which vaccinations my dog needs?

Vaccine recommendations are based on your dog’s age, lifestyle, and exposure risk.

For puppies, we recommend completing the full booster series of:

  • DA2PP (distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, parainfluenza)

  • Rabies

  • Bordetella (for puppies that will be social, attend daycare, training classes, or interact regularly with other dogs)

A booster is recommended one year after the final puppy booster. After this point, we discuss long-term protection options based on your preferences.

Optional vaccines may be discussed depending on risk factors, including:

  • Leptospira (offered for dogs that travel or where owners wish to vaccinate due to potential exposure)

Are vaccinations safe for my dog?

Yes. Vaccinations are thoroughly tested and monitored for safety. While mild side effects like soreness or temporary lethargy can occur, serious reactions are rare. Our veterinary team monitors your dog and can advise on the safest schedule for their health.

What are TITERS for dogs?

TITERS are blood tests that measure your dog’s antibody levels to determine immunity to certain diseases, such as those covered by DA2PP. For clients who prefer to limit repeat vaccinations, TITERS can be used instead of routine DA2PP boosters after the one-year booster, when appropriate.

A small blood sample is required. Please bring your dog’s vaccination history to the appointment, and our team will guide you on any preparation needed.
